Claims closures failing coral trout fishery in Gulf of Mexico
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) said on Monday that an investigation into an April 3 closure of fishing operations off the coast of the Gulf of Mexico revealed that only five fish had been collected by Sunday at a time when about 7,000 fish could be caught.
The closures, on an area about 800 kilometres west of Miami, are expected to cause “significant damage” to coral in the area, the agency said.

NMFS has opened an investigation into two recent closures of trawlers that was prompted by the failure of trawlers to meet expectations for their catch, Pomeranz said. He declined to specify the type of fish that are being collected or whether any penalties will be applied.
He did say the NMFS is “monitoring the situation closely” and is following the advice from the U.S. Coast Guard.
NMFS said it will hold a public meeting with residents on Sept. 30 at the Miami Convention Centre to discuss how to manage an area where fish and wildlife are regularly taken without proper monitoring and controls.
